Decap Dance Organ

Michael Woolf & Jim Harper's Decap dance organ (92-key) filmed January 2007 in Wellington New Zealand. Kinep Boogie, Old Time Songs and Lambada. This organ was rescued as a total wreck and got playing again. This recording was made on it's first fire-up after the 2006-7 winter. The 1970s front has more sparkles than Abba when it's all running ....plus that mirror ball! Many thanks to Michael Woolf!

A Dance organ is a mechanical organ designed to be used in a dance hall or ballroom. Being intended for use indoors, dance organs tend to be quieter than the similar fairground organ. Dance organs were principally used in Belgium and the southern Netherlands.

The Dance organ came into its own during the 1920s, with the large instruments built by Mortier. Apart from Mortier, the principle builders of Dance Organs were Gebroeders Decap, in Belgium, and Gaudin in France.

Early Dance organs were operated by the 'book system' used on fair organs. The more modern instruments are often MIDI computer controlled. Decap built their first MIDI controlled organ in 1996.
