Mar. 15, 2008 Music Monday in Canada

Music Monday 2007 was a very special and important day for music education in Canada. In 2007, more than 1500 schools and organizations participated representing more than 650,000 students, teachers, parents and music lovers everywhere.

Coalition for Music Education in Canada is even creating leadership on the world stage with Music Monday. Australia celebrated their first-ever event to resounding success in August 2007! We hope that our colleagues in the U.K. will join us next year.
New this year is the participation of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio with programming reflecting Music Monday. While their plans are in the early stages, they hope to include both regional and national programming on CBC Radio One and CBC Radio 2 including covering our cross-country events.

On May 5 NAMM (International Music Products Association) will lead U.S. musicians, music organizations and music lovers everywhere to join with the Canadian-based Coalition for Music Education in its fourth annual Music Monday celebration.

On Music Monday, NAMM will invite music makers and musicians from American symphony orchestras, rock bands, jazz ensembles, school bands, hip-hop and rap artists, blues and folk artists to perform the same song together on the same day and at the same exact time to demonstrate music’s importance in our lives.

The Music Monday song will be “Our Song,” composed by Canadian singer/songwriters Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, DALA. The song (in many arrangements) can be downloaded at www.musicmonday.ca.

On the first Monday of May 2008, students and teachers will take their music programs outside into the open air of their school grounds or into their communities, to perform a short concert.

The magic of the event is that at the same point during that day, that is, at 10 am Pacific time, 11 am Mountain time, 12 pm Central time, 1 pm Eastern time and 2 pm Atlantic time, and 2:30 in Newfoundland, schools right across the country are united by one piece of music. Simple and inspiring, this melody is provided to schools in a variety of arrangements suitable for primary choirs through to senior high school bands and ensembles.

In short, it is a piece of music that transcends all genres and unites everyone through the melody and the act of performing it at the same time. The idea is that if one were to open the front door of his or her home and stand on the street on the first Monday in May, one would hear music and the skies would be filled with melody.
