Mar. 24, 2008 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (FIJM) also called the Jazz Fest, is the world’s largest jazz festival (2004 Guinness World Record).

• 3,000 artists from 30 countries
• More than 650 concerts, including 450 free outdoor performances
• Close to 2 million peaceful festivalgoers, including 250,000 tourists and excursionists
• 400 accredited journalists
• 10 free outdoor stages
• 10 concert halls
It is held annually in Montreal, Quebec during the summer season and gathers artists from around the world. It is typically attended by over 2 million people who are attracted by the electric atmosphere, diversity of shows and by the city itself. Many parts of the city's downtown core are closed to traffic for two weeks as outdoor shows are free to the public on many stages. Attendance to some shows is over 100,000.

Shows are held in a wide variety of venues, from relatively small jazz clubs to the large halls of Place des Arts. Some of the outdoor shows are held on cordoned-off streets while others are on terraced parks.

The gigantic summer music celebration features 11 days of non-stop entertainment, from noon to midnight, right in the heart of downtown Montreal. Several city blocs are closed to traffic, as right of way is given exclusively to pedestrians, creating a festive and secure spot with cafés and bistros, an art gallery, street performers and a musical park for children. It’s the summer celebration par excellence for people of all ages and origins, a cultural breath of fresh air, and a place for incredible musical discoveries with influence such as JAZZ, BLUES, LATIN-JAZZ, BRAZILIAN, CUBAN, AFRICAN, REGGAE, CONTEMPORARY, ELECTRONICA.

We can already confirm that the 29th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal will be a vintage year, judging by these incredible artists already announced for the 2008 program! From Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan and a roster of the foremost ambassadors of jazz and its musical cousins, the world’s greatest musicians and interpreters are heading to the premiere summer musical event, presented by General Motors in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan.
