Hayley Westenra's album "Treasure" has been nominated for “NS&I Album of the Year” at this year's Classical BRIT Awards to be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on May 8, 2008. NS&I Album of the Year is chosen by Classic FM listeners and Classic FM Magazine readers. Anyone from around the world may vote, not just people living in the UK. The Classical BRIT Awards are an annual awards ceremony held in the United Kingdom covering aspects of classical music, and are the classical equivalent of pop music's BRIT Awards. | |
The awards are organised by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and were inaugurated in 2000 "in recognition of the achievements of classical musicians and the growth of classical music sales in the UK." The event combines the magic of live performances from some of the most highly regarded classical musicians and performers in the world today, with a number of specially commissioned awards presented throughout the evening. Hayley Dee Westenra (see photo, born 10 April 1987 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a New Zealand soprano of Irish heritage. Her first internationally released album, Pure, reached #1 on the UK classical charts in 2003 and has sold more than two million copies worldwide. "Pure" is the fastest-selling international début classical album to date, and Westenra became an international star, aged 16, when the first of her international albums were released. In August 2006, Westenra joined the Irish group Celtic Woman and toured with them on their 2007 Spring Tour. She is the youngest UNICEF Ambassador to date and has contributed to charities around the world.
