Apr. 2, 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia

The Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia is internationally recognized now as one of the world's great Piano Competitions. The Competition was inaugurated in July 1977 by Claire Dan AM OBE and is held every four years. The competition will take place from 16th July to 2nd August 2008.

Sydney is not only a significant centre of the Arts but a city which has produced and fostered artists of international distinction, whose contributions to music are well known. The Sydney Opera House (see photo) is a symbol of the city's commitment to attaining the highest standards in all areas of the performing arts.

Thirty-six pianists are selected from around the world to compete. The first prize winner receives $25,000 AUD, and a number of smaller prizes exist as well.
In the competition's thirty-year history, no Australian pianists have won the event.

The Competition is open to pianists of any nationality who are aged 17 but under 31 years of age on the 16th July 2008. It is not open to previous first prizewinners of the Sydney International Piano Competition.

John Chen is a concert pianist from New Zealand. In 2004 he became the youngest winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition. Just 18-years-old, Chen won over the judges with his captivating interpretation of Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto performed in the Sydney Opera House.

The Competition will have five stages. Stages I, II, III and IV will be held in the Seymour Center, University of Sydney. Stage V will be held in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. The Prizewinners’ Concert will be held in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House.

All stages of the Competition will be broadcast live throughout Australia and New Zealand and worldwide on the internet by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The Opening Ceremony of the Competition will be on Wednesday evening, 16 July 2008 at 8 PM.
