Spring Awakening is a Tony Award-winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The musical is based on the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. The original play was banned in Germany due to its extremely controversial content, which included masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide. During the musical, characters sometimes break the fourth wall to express their frustrations, motivations, and desires directly to the audience. The show opened on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006 and received critical acclaim. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical and the 2008 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. The production is directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones. Decca Broadway released the original cast recording on December 12, 2006, with the recording later winning the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album on February 10, 2008. The guitar Sheik used to compose songs for Spring Awakening is on display at the New York Library For The Performing Arts. Spring Awakening explodes on the stage and pours out over the audience like hormones raging through a sixteen year-old body. It is a story of uncontrollable emotions and undeniable passions, of first love and lasting regrets. But most remarkably, it is a musical that answers the questions teenagers have been asking forever. A U.S. National Tour (with one stop in Toronto, Canada) is scheduled to open in August, 2008. Tour dates have been announced through August 2009 beginning on the West Coast in 2008, and moving to the East Coast by June 2009. Productions have been announced for 2009 openings in the UK, Canada, Israel (in Hebrew), Germany and Austria (in German), Spain (in Spanish), Japan (in Japanese), France (in French), The Netherlands (in Dutch), Denmark (in Danish), Finland (in Finnish), Iceland (in Icelandic), Norway (in Norwegian), South Korea (in Korean) and Sweden (in Swedish). |
Spring Awakening Preview Spring Awakening: "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind" - John Gallagher, Jr., and Lauren Pritchard Lyrics: Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind Spring and summer, Every other day, Blue wind gets so sad. Blowin' through the thick corn, Through the bales of hay, Through the open books on the grass... Spring and summer... Sure, when it's autumn, Wind always wants to Creep up and haunt you-- Whistling, it's got you; With its heartache, with its sorrow, Winter wind sings, and it cries... Awful sweet to be a little butterfly. Just wingin' over things, and nothin' deep inside. Nothin' goin', goin' wild in you--you know-- You're slowin' by the riverside or floatin' high and blue... Or, maybe, cool to be a little summer wind. Like, once through everything, and then away again. With a taste of dust in your mouth all day, But no need to know, like, sadness--you just sail away. 'Cause, you know, I don't do sadness--not even a little bit. Just don't need it in my life--don't want any part of it. I don't do sadness. Hey, I've done my time. Lookin' back on it all--man, it blows my mind. I don't do sadness. So been there. Don't do sadness. Just don't care. |
