Mr. Holland's Opus is a 1995 drama film in which Richard Dreyfuss (see photo taken by Alan Light) plays Glenn Holland, a dedicated musician and composer who had profound effect on generations of students. The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation (MHOF) was inspired by the film. The film's composer, Michael Kamen, founded MHOF in 1996 as his commitment to the future of music education. | |
MHOF donates instruments to music programs where students have access to a music curriculum but lack the resources and support base to adequately keep up with equipment loss due to attrition, depreciation and wear over time. MHOF's goal is to help children achieve their greatest potential and to close the gap that exists in underserved communities. MHOF believes that in giving students the opportunities and benefits derived from playing and learning music, their lives are enriched in myriad ways. Guidelines for applying for a MHOF Grant: MHOF receives more than 900 applications each year. Music programs serving low-income communities, programs with little or no budget for musical instruments and programs that serve the most students out of the school population are considered before all others. The next application deadline is August 1, 2008. Melody Program helps K-12 school instrumental music programs that take place during the regular school day. • Schools must have an established instrumental music program (i.e. concert band, marching band, jazz band and/or orchestra) that is at least three years old. Special Projects Program helps after-school music programs. • After-school music programs must be at least three years old or have a music-related umbrella organization that is at least three years old to apply. |
