Professor Daniel J. Levitin, (born December 27, 1957, San Francisco) is an American cognitive psychologist, neuroscientist, record producer, musician, and writer. He is currently a Professor at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Within cognitive psychology, he has published articles on absolute pitch and music cognition and perception. He has worked as a producer and sound designer on albums by Blue Öyster Cult, Chris Isaak, and Joe Satriani; as a consultant to Steely Dan and consultant and liner-note writer on a Stevie Wonder compilation; and as a recording engineer for Santana and The Grateful Dead. | |
Records and CDs to which he has contributed have sold in excess of 30 million copies. He is the author of the best-selling book "This Is Your Brain on Music:The Science of a Human Obsession." Studying human brain (see photo) is important because understanding how the brain functions allows us to get closer to treating people with serious brain injuries or diseases such as Alzheimer's.
