October (16-18) brings the 2008 Garden State Harmonica Club Festival, three days of music and dining in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, all fully open to the public. The affair is a feast of music and culinary treats. Every day of the Festival includes Sing and Play Along sessions, open microphone opportunities (a sort of Harmonica Karaoke), jam and blues sessions, seminars on playing techniques, and how-to repairs, and music, music and more music. Each day builds up to the Grand Finale and Banquet Saturday night. Founded in 1971 by George Osterman, a local musician, the Garden State Harmonica Club is one of the nation's leading harmonica organizations, providing a gathering place for those who share the enjoyment of this simple yet beautiful "mouth organ." The membership is drawn from a wide geographic area, and includes beginning players, professionals, former professionals, and others who attend simply to hear the great sounds of which the instrument is capable. The club also supports a Harmonica Ensemble which performs frequently throughout the area, providing entertainment for various local organizations. 2008 Lineup BOB McFARLANE, CHARLES SPRANKLIN, CHARLIE TOKER AND ROUTE 17 NORTH BAND, CHRIS BAUER, ENRICO GRANAFEI, GSHC ENSEMBLE, HARMONICA HOTSHOTS (Al & Judy Smith), THE HARMONITONES (Dave Denkers, Mike Irace, George Savas), STAN HARPER, JIA-YI HE, THE SOCIETY BOYS (Phil Caltabellotta, Shelly Lulov, Tom Scerbo), Isaac ben Ayala on Keyboard |
