Each year in early June, tens of thousands of music lovers from throughout the country flock to the suburb of Washington, D.C. to attend the world's largest showcase of contemporary jazz - The Capital Jazz Fest. This multi-day, multi-stage outdoor music festival is a place to hear some of the world's finest contemporary jazz music performed by artists. The 16th annual Capital Jazz Fest (June 6-8, 2008) features live music on two stages. | |
The Pavilion Stage will showcase the best in contemporary jazz and will be hosted by Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Patti Austin (see photo). And this year's Friday kickoff concert will feature a special performance by Boney James and Brian McKnight. The Capital Jazz Fest is held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. Fest-goers may enjoy the festival up-close and theatre-style in the open-air covered pavilion, or outdoors and picnic-style on the gently-sloping lawn. On Friday, June 6 at the Hilton Columbia hotel, the festival will host its fifth annual live performance competition, featuring up-and-coming contemporary jazz artists. Artists will compete for a $7,500 prize and a chance to perform on the festival's Pavilion stage on Saturday, June 7. Admission to the competition is free.
