June 28, 2008 Discover the Music-Brain Connection


small concert hall in Salzburg Austria called the MozarteumThe Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Clinic, world leaders in music and medicine, will convene a symposium called “Music and the Brain” to examine new understandings about the vast impact of music on the human brain. This event is part of a newly launched collaboration between the Cleveland Clinic and The Cleveland Orchestra, led by the Orchestra’s Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and Ali Rezai, Director, Center for Neurological Restoration, Cleveland Clinic.
The symposium will be held on August 16 in Mozarteum University of Salzburg (see photo), Austria. It will be part of the Salzburg Festival, an annual five-week-long music and drama festival. It is the first program of its kind to be held during the Salzburg Festival.

Audiences will be exposed to a variety of interrelated topics including:
• Where in the brain does creativity live?
• What happens to your brain when you listen to music?
• Are musicians’ brains different?
• Are musical abilities “hard wired?”
• How music influences cultural beliefs
• Using music to treat medical disorders
• Music’s role in healing and wellness
• Social implications of the music-brain connection

The symposium will feature an internationally renowned group of experts and dignitaries from Europe and North American representing the fields of music, neuroscience, health and wellness, psychology, and philosophy.
