Ukulele Lesson #7: Ukulele Fretboard

Ukulele FretboardA fret wire is the raised portion on the neck of a ukulele that extends across the full width of the neck. Fret wires divide the neck into fixed segments (frets) at intervals related to a musical framework. Each fret represents one semitone (half-step) in the standard western system where one octave is divided into twelve semitones.

All of the notes that share the same fret space are enharmonic notes. In modern music, an enharmonic is a note which is the equivalent of some other note, but spelled differently. For example, in twelve-tone equal temperament, the notes C♯ and D♭ are enharmonically equivalent - that is, they are identical in pitch, although they have different names and diatonic functionality.

Enharmonic notes examples: E# = F; F♭ = E; G# = A♭
