The 2007-2008 season is OSW’s 35th year of producing world-class opera in Albuquerque. OSW produces two to three major operas per year selected from the best of the standard repertoire. To date OSW has produced 117 major operas for nearly 250,000 patrons, and has mounted 23 world premieres by local composers, including original operas created especially for Albuquerque’s children. These smaller operas stress community and educational themes, and have delighted more than 180,000 youngsters with dazzling, exciting, live theatre. In this way, OSW ensures a loyal following in future years as these children grow into adulthood.

Die Fledermaus (in English: The Bat;' in French: La Chauve-souris') is a comic opera or operetta composed by Johann Strauss II (see photo) to a German libretto by Carl Haffner and Richard Genée.

The operetta premièred on April 5, 1874 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria and has been part of the regular opera/operetta repertoire ever since. It currently appears as number 19 on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.

Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899) was an Austrian composer known especially for his waltzes, such as On The Beautiful Blue Danube. Son of the composer Johann Strauss I, and brother of composers Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss; Johann II is the most famous member of the Strauss family. He was known in his lifetime as "the waltz king" and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.
