The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) is an annual 3-day music festival celebrating the diversity of "world music" formerly known as ethnic music held in Kuching, the capital of the East Malaysian state of Sarawak. Its formula of afternoon informative workshops, ethno-musical lectures, jamming sessions and mini concerts, followed by evening performances on the main stage has proven to be a hit with the audience, who come from near and far. About 24,000 people attended RWMF 2007. RWMF 2008 will be held July 11 to 13. The diverse culture of the multi racial society in Sarawak will be showcased by the four bands: Anak Jati Bisaya Orchestra, Kan’id, Senida and Tuku Kame. Both Anak Jati Bisaya Orkestra (see photo) and Kan’id are made up of youngsters who are passionate in learning their roots. For the RWMF show, the orchestra members - four boys and six girls with age ranging from six to 15 years old, will play 20 gongs of various sizes and dumbak (wooden drum) and their music are slow and soulful. Kan’id is consisted of 12 teenages of Kelabit heritage and they are going to dance and sing the Kelabit folk songs to the beat of the sape. Both Senida and Tuku Kame are the resident band and performers of Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV). Senida which is short for Seni Damai will showcase the members’ skill at playing various traditional musical instruments like the sape and gong. It will also perform folkdances like the zapin, joget and lakon beradat during the festival. As for Tuku Kame, the band is not new to the festival after having performed numerous times in the previous RWMF. All the four local bands will be sharing the same stage with the other international bands like Adel Salameh from Palestine, the New String Rope Band (UK), Senida (Sarawak), Akasha (Kuala Lumpur), Ross Daly Quartet (Greece), Cholo Valderamma (Colombia), Hiroshi Motofuji (Japan)m Oikyotaan (India), Kasai Masai (Congo), Pinikpikan (Philippines), Sheldon Blackman and The Love Circle (Trinidad and Tabago), Yakande (Gambia/Guinea) and Fadomorse (Portugal). | |
